IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Boothill
Canon: Honkai: Star Rail
Canon Point: Post-2.6
Age: Mid-30s.
Background: Boothill's Lore at the Star Rail Wiki.

Arrival Scenario: Free Cities

Suitability: Boothill is originally from a planet that had a similar level of technology as the Free Cities; a very picturesque Wild West kind of place with guns and trains, but nothing really more advanced than that. But, he is also from a universe where magic is generally accepted as real, and has been making his way around that for several years now. As for the setting itself, I can see him interacting and butting heads with the powers that be in the Free Cities as endgame approaches, but also being a subject of scientific fascination by the military, (considering what happened with the Thunderjaw and the loss of the facilities where research was being performed). He will have to engage with New Magic, at some level, as a matter of survival, which will force him to remain in the Free Cities, even though he's more of a wandering vagabond type. Boothill also claims to adhere to a level of non-interference for matters that have nothing to do with him, but because he has a strong sense of justice, and no tolerance for those who are "evil" or use their power to harm innocents, it is very easy for him to get tangled up in stuff anyway.

Powers:
  • Boothill is a cyborg, with over 90% of his original body replaced and augmented. He is faster, stronger, and sturdier than a regular human, and has a hand that can transform into a hand cannon, as well as spurs set into his boots feet that he can use to kick the shit out of people. The cyborg body can go for extended periods of time in the wilderness without recharging his power supply (something he will have to figure out how to do in-game), but not indefinitely, and he does require a level of maintenance and upkeep.
  • Part of his body modifications includes a Synesthesia Beacon which normally translates the communication and languages of other intelligent species into something the wearer understands and vice-versa. This has been nerfed to be non-functioning, except for the feature that acts as a real time profanity filter, turning Boothill's swear words into inoffensive nonsense against his will, because it's one of his fun character quirks and I don't want to lose it even though there's an IC translation magic already.
  • It is also implied that he has the ability to sense when someone is a memetic entity like a Memokeeper, due to no longer being in possession of most of his own body, and that he has a high resistance to mental interference/brainwashing. He was able to wake himself up from a vision of a false paradise, without outside assistance because of that strength of will.
  • Finally, Boothill is a Galaxy Ranger, one of the factions in the universe of Star Rail that follows the Path of the Hunt. He has no visible powers from walking this path, apart from the ability to use relics belonging to other Galaxy Rangers, and maybe good luck, considering his proclivity for dodging live gunfire.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
Well. When the Interastral Peace Corporation could not get direct permission from the residents of Aeragan-Epharshel to mine ore in their home, inter-department competition led Oswaldo Schneider, of the Marketing Development Department, to make the decision to use lethal, overwhelming military force to eliminate opposition to resource extraction and "civilize" Aeragan-Epharshel. Boothill, having previously infiltrated the IPC ship that was serving as headquarters, witnessed the order being given, but failed to return home and give warning in time. Along with most of the rest of his community, Boothill's parents, friends, siblings and infant daughter all perished in the genocide, and grief and raeg set him on his quest for vengeance. In turn, the destruction of Aeragan-Epharshel even led to his decision to replace most of his body with cybernetics, to better facilitate that revenge.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
As a Galaxy Ranger and follower of the Hunt, Boothill believes that justice in the universe needs to be upheld by individual actions, and if need be, swift and decisive violence. He has two bottom lines, which he will not cross and will not tolerate others crossing: bullying the weak and killing innocents. In particular, Boothill's justice doubles for vengeance when it is directed at the Interastral Peace Corporation, the galaxy-spanning exploitative entity that is directly responsible for the violent eradication of his home, family, and community in order to extract natural resources from his home planet. He spares no mercy for the IPC members who are willing to enact violence on others, but exercises restraint for those who are being exploited by the company as well (like the poor overworked intern at the Wardance, despite her treating him like a dirtbag).

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Boothill's ability to like other people is determined by his ability to find similarities between them and himself, because often that means they hold similar values as him. In particular, he gets along well with Argenti, the Knight of Beauty, because they are both filled with a sense of justice and are both "packing heat." Or Aventurine, who is technically an enemy because he works for the IPC, he feels a kinship with because of their shared unpredictability and lack of caution. Even the final boss of the Penacony storyline, Sunday, is someone Boothill can relate to on a level — he understands that good intentions can lead someone "to hell," especially if one is determined to see their goals through to the end. Sacrificing your humanity for revenge isn't so different from sacrificing it to ensure the salvation of others through well-intentioned subjugation, is it?

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Boothill doesn't see himself as a living person, really. Tradition on his home, Aeragan-Epharshel, says that death is considered the fairest form of grace. When people die, the good are preserved for eternity with their innocence, and evildoers are wiped from the earth as cleanly as possible--the greatest grace they will ever receive in return for their sins. Based on the fact that Boothill named himself after a graveyard and exists with less than 10% of his original body, he considers himself less than alive, but he is also not fully dead, so he still can't have that fairest form of grace. The person he once was is as good as dead and gone because the people he loved are gone, and though the doesn't necessarily hate himself, the subject of his humanity is a complicated subject he's not interested in examining.

What is their sign, and why?
The Hierophant; Boothill's got an ironclad personal sense of justice, even though he doesn't fight against the idea of the thug and scumbag that so many people are eager to cast him as. He takes responsibility for his own actions and won't tolerate evil in others. Those who know what Galaxy Rangers are know that they appear in places for two reasons: hunting evil, and settling grudges. Sometimes, it’s the same thing.
